How it began, how it has become and what we our goal is!
Jan van Driel has been active with the Shetland ponies since 1998. Several years ago we also starte breeding Friesians, Haflingers and Schwarzwalders. Meanwhile, our breedingstud grew and achieved a renowned reputation. With the beautiful accommodation in Liessel we realised optimal facilities for breeding. Here we tell you all about then, now and in the future!
Jan started breeding Shetlands under the studname”Het Dommeldal”. First he was located in Liempde. The famous mare in that period was Gladys van Stal Dommeldal (1992) This brown roan mare has become the crown and preference mother of the breeding of Danielle van Nuland, where a long line national toppers is born, like many national champion Roccobarocco of Nuwelant.
Another great breeder success came in 1999 when the now approved skewbald stallion Olivier van Stal de Lagevoort was born. Meanwhile the new and current stable name “Stal de Lagevoort” was a fact. Olivier is a son of the beautiful piebald mare Vesta Stal Torenzicht (v. August of the Waterfall), who was certainly one of Jan’s best mares.
How it continued
The real advance came after the marriage with Maria, who was also a fanatic Shetlandpony fan. Stal de Lagevoort than grew into its current size under the care of Jan and Maria van Driel, purely as a hobby with the love of Shetland as a solid basis.
In recent years we choose to expand the breeding with Frisian horses, Haflingers and Schwarzwalders. It also meant our hobby became partly commercially.
Objective and Vision
Our main purpose is to breed a healthy and good quality pony or horse. In addition, we find it very important to advise future breeders and buyers. Stal de Lagevoort believes that the breeding of horses and ponies of the highest quality, can best be achieved by choosing proven predicate rich bloodlines. Character and usability are high on the agenda. We aim to breed horses and ponies that just have that little bit extra in type, race, movement and use, making it truly distinguish from the average breed standard. Our goal is certainly not to simply multilply horses and ponies, but deliberately seeking the best stallions that best fit our mares to breed the best foal possible.
Outstanding shetland stallions for covering
Because of the arrival of quality foals every year, we regularly offer well bred topquality ponies for sale. Besides that you can also contact us for a natural cover of your mini or small size ponies, by one of our topstallions. You can count on an honest opinion about the stallion selection and we will of course take excellent care of your mare (and foal) during their stay at Stal de Lagevoort.
